Interview with a Correctional Officer

Corrections professionals: colleagues, team members, role models, mentors

Interview with a Correctional Officer

(BOP) - As we celebrate national Correctional Workers' Week (May 7 - 13, 2023), the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) recognizes that the general public may not understand that being a Correctional Officer goes far beyond the uniform and law enforcement benefits. It is an opportunity to create change. At more than 120 federal prisons across the country, our team of corrections professionals uphold the safety of our facilities, our communities, and our country. But they also serve as role models and mentors who change the hearts, minds and lives of incarcerated individuals remanded to our care and custody. Below, a Correctional Officer shares their career trajectory and experience with the BOP.

Q: How do you describe your team at BOP and how important is the team dynamic in your daily operations?

A: Once you walk through the gates you're with your second family. Knowing that you are working with people who have your back makes going to work easier.

Q: How did you get started in your career at BOP?

A: I started at BOP to get my foot in the door because I heard it was a great place to begin a career in corrections. I've been at the Bureau for almost 13 years now. I've done a lot and learned a lot as a Correctional Officer. I plan to put in for lieutenant within a year or two.

There are a lot of career opportunities in the BOP. Some you might need to be willing to relocate to pursue. Whatever route you'd like to take there's lots of training opportunities to take advantage of. I've also taken on several different collateral duties that I enjoy.

Q: What's one of the most important qualities a Correctional Officer in the BOP should have?

A: You have to know how to work well with colleagues and build good working relationships. It means everything to know your coworkers have your back. Camaraderie is very important.

Q: What are some benefits and positive experiences that are most valuable to you as a BOP employee?

A: The Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) [the retirement savings plan for federal employees] has allowed colleagues to enjoy retirement and not worry about getting another job.

You get bonuses depending on performance. I've been able to get bonuses and step increases. Since I've been with BOP I've been able to purchase a house and provide for my family. I'm grateful to be in a stable career.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons has numerous openings for important, fulfilling careers in corrections, with opportunities for growth and many benefits.
