(BOP) - Ramón Tarafa-Ortiz, Intelligence Officer with the Bureau's Intelligence and Counter Terrorism Branch, National Gang Unit, was recognized by the Department of Justice Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys (EOUSA). The 38th annual Director's Award Ceremony was held in the Great Hall of the Robert F. Kennedy Department of Justice Building in Washington, D.C. on May 3, 2023. EOUSA Director Monty Wilkinson presented the award.

Mr. Tarafa-Ortiz was honored with the EOUSA Director's Award for Superior Performance by a Litigative Team. This award reflects the immeasurable efforts put into the investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the murder of Bureau of Prisons Lieutenant Osvaldo Albarati on February 26, 2013, in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. Mr. Tarafa-Ortiz worked in tandem with the FBI and the US Attorney's Office in Puerto Rico throughout the 23-month investigation. The thorough and comprehensive work resulted in the arrest and conviction of nine individuals, three adults in federal custody who coordinated the attack from inside the Metropolitan Detention Center Guaynabo and six who conspired to carry out the murder from the outside.

Mr. Tarafa-Ortiz was honored to receive the award in recognition of the immense sacrifice of Lieutenant Albarati, who gave his life in service to the Bureau of Prisons. More information can be found on Lieutenant Albarati's Fallen Hero page on the Bureau's public website.
