William W. Lothrop
William W. Lothrop is the Acting Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons. As acting Director, Mr. Lothrop oversees the operation of 122 Bureau of Prisons' facilities, six regional offices, two staff training centers, and 22 residential reentry management offices. He is also responsible for the oversight and management of approximately 35,000 staff and 160,000 federal inmates.
Mr. Lothrop began his career with the Bureau in 1992, as a Correctional Officer at USP Lewisburg (PA). He served in positions of increasing responsibility, including Senior Officer Specialist for the activation of FCI Edgefield (SC); Lieutenant at FCI Ray Brook (NY); and Captain at FCI Loretto (PA), FCI Englewood (CO), and USP Atwater (CA).
In 2010, Mr. Lothrop was promoted to Associate Warden at FCC Lompoc (CA) and in 2014, he transferred to FCC Victorville (CA), as Associate Warden at the USP. Mr. Lothrop was promoted to Warden at FDC Honolulu (HI) in April 2016, and he was appointed Warden at FCI Phoenix (AZ) in November 2017, a position he held until October 2021, when he was selected as Regional Director for the Southeast Region. In June 2022, Mr. Lothrop was named as the Acting Deputy Director for the agency and served in the position until being selected as the Deputy Director in March 2023.
Acting Director Lothrop has been a member of the Senior Executive Service since 2017.
